The colony was conceived as a free town settlement. The settlement company, that had been granted a charter had no colonists and therefore it turned to emancipated african Americans who had served in the American war as black loyalists.The company recruited approximately 1,196 former American slaves from free African communities around Nova Scotia such as Birch town. Most had escaped Virginia and South Carolina plantations. There was a considerable number that had been born in Africa before being enslaved and taken to America.
