President Richard M. Nixon announced delivering a televised speech that he was planning on being the first president in American history to resign.
He was under to much pressure from the public and Congress to leave the White House as a result of the impeachment proceedings underway against him for his involvement in the Watergate affair.
He claimed: “I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America.”
