Researchers have found that people tend to pair off with partners who are about as attractive as themselves. This is known as the matching phenomenon.
The matching phenomenon, or also referred to as matching hypothesis was introduced by the sociologist Elaine Hatfield and her colleagues in 1966. The hypothesis states that people have a tendency to choose partners whose level of attractiveness they believe to be equal to their own.
