In imperialist-controlled countries, the people of the country are typically required to give up their traditions and take on the cultural beliefs of the imperial country. Those that give up their traditions and embrace the imperial culture are often rewarded with government positions and incentives. This was especially true in African empires, where tribal traditions were often outlawed by European countries. People were expected to convert to Christianity and practice European cultural norms. Those that did were given access to education, government positions, and jobs whereas those that did not were punished or even exiled from the lands.
