The Byzantine Empire had a stronghold in Eastern Europe at the time, and had almost completely conquered the Middle East and Central Europe.

It was a stronghold of Christianity and Western power as a United Empire. Some of its most important exports were education, arts and crafts, and world culture.

Western Europe, on the other hand, was experiencing the "Dark Ages" during the time.The majority of the minor kingdoms and tribes were poor, with few big industries and little worldwide economic influence.
