Miss Tan has some sweets to give her children. If she gives each child 4 sweets, she would have 5 sweets left. If she gives each child 6 sweets, she would need 11 more sweets. How many children are there?

If n is the number of children and s is the number of sweets, then

4n+5 = s

and

6n-11 = s

So

4n+5 = 6n-11 =>
5+11 = 6n-4n =>
2n = 16 => n=8

There are 8 children and, for the record, 37 sweets
