Hey there!

Let's start with the original equation:
x ÷ 5 + 1 = 5

The first step to solving is to subtract 1 from each side of the equation. Since we are doing this to both sides, the equation will still be equal.

x ÷ 5 = 4

The next thing we have to do is multiply each side by 5, so we have the variable x on its own. Again, the equation stays equal because we are doing the same thing to both sides of the equation.

x = 20

Let's check our solution.

Take the equation x ÷ 5 + 1 = 5 and put 20 in the place where x is.

20 ÷ 5 + 1 = 5

Order of operations says division comes before addition, so we can do that first. Divide 20 by 5.

4 + 1 = 5

Add 4 and 1 together.

5 = 5

Looks like the equation checks out!

So, your answer is x = 20!

Hope this helps!

Hey there! :)

If you switch it around, it becomes: 5 - 1 = x/5

5 - 1 = 4

4 = x/5

If you switch that around, it becomes: 4 × 5 = x

4 × 5 = 20

20 = x

Hope this helps :)
