Before the Spanish American War many Americans were excited about the war and even pressured President McKinley into war through yellow journalism. Americans were hungry to assert their dominance internationally and compete with European countries who were imperializing, and thought that going to war with Spain and taking their territories was a good solution. During the Spanish American war, Americans heavily supported the war (due to the reasons listed above).
