The leader was called Chief Joseph the Younger
Born in 1840, in Willowa valley, he was one of the leaders of the Nez Perce people. The reason he confronted the government was an opposition to white settlers settlement in his people native land in Oregon. After a botched retreat to Canada, he surrendered and swore never to fight again, and spent the rest of his life appealing for his people case through court means. He even met with President Rutherford Hayes in 1879.
