The movement that pushed the idea that an individual could go beyond themselves and listen to their own conscience and not religion to learn about the truth is TRANSCENDENTALISM.
Transcendentalism is a movement that developed in New England around 1830s. The movement holds that humans' knowledge of reality comes from an analysis of their thought process rather from religion or scientific evidence. The movement was especilally embraced by the intellectuals of that period.
