Given quadratic equation :
0 = 4x^2+2x- 1

Let us apply standard quadratic form
0=ax^2+bx+c

We know, quadratic formula

x = (-b+-√(b^2-4ac))/(2a)

a = 4

b = 2

c= -1

Now we plug in all the values in quadratic formula

x = (-b+-√(b^2-4ac))/(2a) \\ x = (-2+-√(2^2-4(4)(-1)))/(2(4))\\ x = (-2+-√(18))/(8).

The above one is the substitution of values of a,b,c in quadratic formula.
