The pool at the hotel where Gabriel is staying is symmetrical and shaped like the letter “W” below.

The bottom surface of the pool is flat and needs new tile. If each tile covers 1/2 of a square yard and costs $3, what is the cost of the tiles to retile the bottom of the pool?

Answer:

The cost of the tiles to re-tile the bottom of the pool is $3000

Explanation:

* Lets use the attached figure to solve the problem

- The pool is symmetrical and shaped like the letter “W” as the

attached figure

- Each tile covers 1/2 of a square yard and costs $3

- To find the area of the pool we consider the pool consists of two

rectangles with dimensions 20 yards and 10 yards and a square of

side 10 yards

∵ The area of the rectangle is the product of the two dimensions

∵ The area of the square is side × side

∴ The area of the pool = 20 × 10 + 20 × 10 + 10 × 10

∴ The area of the pool = 200 + 200 + 100 = 500 yard²

- Each tile covers 1/2 yard²

∴ The number of tiles = area pool ÷ area tile

∴ The number of tiles = 500 ÷ 1/2 = 1000 tiles

- The cost of each tile is $3

∵ The cost of the tiles = number of tiles × cost of 1 tile

∴ The cost of the tiles = 1000 × 3 = 3000

* The cost of the tiles to re-tile the bottom of the pool is $3000
