He died in Tucapel, in the Captaincy General of Chile (territory of the Spanish Empire from 1541 to 1818, which comprised most of modern day Chile) on December 25, 1553. After participating in several military campaigns in Europe, Valdivia traveled to America, with the troops of Francisco Pizarro, Governor of Perú. Valdivia lead the conquest of Chile from 1540, and was the founder of the country's oldest cities, Santiago (1542), La Serena (1544), Concepción (1550), Valdivia (1552), and La Imperial (1552). In 1542 he was designated the title of Governor and General Captain of the Kingdom of Chile.

-Alberto Hurtado, popularly known as Father Hurtado, was a chilean lawyer, legislator and Jesuit priest. He is considered the Patron saint of chilean workers. He was canonized by the Pope Benedict XVI on October 23, 2005, becoming the second saint born in Chile. He focused his energies on bringing the church closer to the youth and the poorest people. He devoted his life to education, and worked as a professor for many years. His work for the poor people and workers led to criticism from the high society, earning the nickname "The red priest" or "Communist priest". Hurtado is one of the most popular and cherished saints in Chile, as seen on the day of Hurtado´s canonization, which drew a very large contingent of Chilean people, led by the then President Ricardo Lagos.
