INFERNO CANTO II - "I was among those spirits in suspense:

A lady called me, so beautiful and blessed
That I at once implored her to command me.

"Her eyes outshone the light of any star.
Sweetly and softly she began to speak

In Inferno Canto II , the speaker introduced herself to be Beatrice.

Beatrice is the girl Dante loved in his younger years. ("Bice" di Folco Portinari is thought to be the inspiration to La Vita Nuova and Divine Comedy).

She urges Dante to advance in the journey. She appears to be Dante's guide.
