It is important for scientists to organize life into a hierarchy for study to determine shared properties that make something "alive"--how the organ systems are built together, work together and carry out processes, and to determine how various living things function. Scientists organize the different kinds of organisms to better understand how the diversity arose and how it is continuing to survive.
