Cro-magnons and Neanderthals were both humans but were different species of humans. Modern humans are descended from Cro-magnons but Neanderthals became extinct. Both existed during the same period of history. It is not known whether or not Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals interbred but it is a theory that Neanderthals became extinct from interbreeding with Cro-magnons and become "absorbed" by Cro-Magnons although I don't believe there is any genetic evidence to support this theory. Cro-Magnons resembled modern humans. Neanderthals had more sloped foreheads and larger ribcages and were stronger than Cro-Magnon. Cro-magnon had better tools, making the better hunters
