Exceptional challenges African Americans had to face during the 1920s were disenfranchisement, racism, segregation, not being able to vote, and violence.

They had to deal with things like disenfranchisement, racism, segregation, not being able to vote, threats of physical violence and physical violence itself, including things like lynching and other similar things. They also had to deal with lack of education and the lack of ability to go to public schools which were segregated.
