He witnessed poverty and de facto segregation in the North that was met with institutional resistance, skepticism from other activists and open violence. The form of segregation that Luther witnessed in the north, and the violent crack down, that was meted upon him, on his arrival to the north was unprecedented compared to what he had witnessed in the south.
