Why did Charlotte Perkins Gilman use first-person narration in her short story "The Yellow Wallpaper"?

First person narration is used to create an atmosphere of ominous tension and unease. The author could also get more intimate and detailed in the character's current feelings and emotions. It helps create the illusion that the reader is peering into another persons inner consciousness and seeing the world through the characters eyes.
