The distance between a seismic station and the earthquake epicenter is determined from the arrival times of p and s waves. These are the differences in time of the between the arrival of the very first p wave and the very first s wave. So as to find the epicenter of the earthquake, one will require a minimum of 3 seismic stations. This is because the three radial circles will meet at one point to determine the center.
