A coordinate grid is placed over a map and every unit represents 1 km.

The point at (2,3) represents of the library and the point at (6,-1) represents the location of the police station

To the nearest tenth of a kilometer, what is the distance between the library and the police station?

The formula for the distance between these 2 points is
d= \sqrt{( x_(2)- x_{1) ^(2)+( y_(2)- y_(1)) ^(2). Your x1 is 2, your x2 is 6, your y1 is 3, and your y2 is -1. So let's fill in then:
d= \sqrt{(6-2) ^(2)+(-1-3) ^(2) }. This simplifies to
d= \sqrt{(4) ^(2)+(-4) ^(2) } which is
d= √(32). This comes out to 5.66
