Emily is talking about her day while her mom cooks dinner. As Emily is talking about the report she gave to her science class, her mom is distracted by something burning while cooking dinner for the family. When her attention is free again, she asks Emily to repeat what she just said. Emily feels hurt because her mom did not hear her story and leaves the room. What went wrong in this exchange? What could Emily and her mom do to improve their communication?

Answer:

Communication involves the process of coding and decoding of information. There is usually a feedback after communication to ensure that the process is effective. Emily was trying to pass across a message but the mother could not decode because another thing has engaged her attention in the kitchen. Listening and comprehension was lost during the line of communication which affected feedback

What went wrong is that there was miscommunication

The mum could have asked Emily to hold on a minute while she sorts out what was burning and then come back to listen to her daughter
