To find the average of something, is just like saying to find the "mean".
To do so, first we add up all the given numbers. (In this case we are given pounds, so we'll just add "lb" at the end) 2+5+7+5+9+8=36 lb
Then, we have to divide our sum by the amount of things being added. We know that there are 6 boxes, so we divide our sum of 36 by 6. 36 Ib /6 =6 Ib
The average weight of the packages is 6 lb.

So to find the average, you need to add all of the numbers and divide that by how many numbers there are.
So in this case:
The average weight is 6 lbs
