Acids dissociate in water to release a proton. The proton then combines with water to form a hydronium ion.

HCl, hydrochloric acid dissociates in water to release proton H⁺ and chloride ion Cl⁻

HCl → H⁺ + Cl⁻

H⁺ + H₂O → H₃O⁺
