A group of French artists, painters, gathered around Fauvism, was the first movement in modern art of the 20th century. This movement was originally inspired by the works of Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Paul Cézanne. They were led by Henri Matisse, who, like Albert Marquet, and Georges Rouault, was a student of the Symbolist artist Gustave Moreau. The painters of this movement used intense colors in their paintings as a means of displaying light and space. They redefined the pure color and form as a display of the artist's emotional state. Fauvism was the precursor to Cubism, Expressionism and many future modern abstract art directions.

The leader of the fauves was Henry Matisse. He arrived at Fauvism by studying and experimenting with the styles of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gaugain, Georges Seurat and Paul Cezanne.
