The reasons why Congress wanted a written Declaration of Independence are The Congress hoped other colonists would join the Revolution, The colonists hoped to get aid from foreign nations and the soldiers needed a good reason for fighting. Not everybody wanted to be independent, so this declaration could get the support of other colonists. The soldiers were mostly farmers and it gave them a very good reason to fight for. Moreover, being an independent nation, the United States could ask foreign nations for money and supplies.
