Gatsby's initial longing for the green light is because of Daisy. The green light, in a sense, symbolizes his past (mainly the love he cannot reach) and his faith. The effect of him gazing out at the green light (located at the end of Daisy's dock) informs us that he is 1.) searching for something (presumably Daisy) which he cannot obtain yet and 2.) is yearning for a past time which suited him.

I am assuming the "light" in your question refers to the green one. Hope this helps!

The light in the great Gatsby Is a sign of money and hope that is involved in the relationship with Daisy. In the first scene they see each other again the light appears in a sense that Gatsby is no longer dreaming and he is finally with her
