The mockingbird is an important symbol in the novel. It is a symbol of innocence and harmlessness. When Atticus says that it is sin to shoot a mockingbird, Scout asks Mrs. Maudie why. She responds that mockingbirds do no harm as opposed to other birds, and that they simply sing and create beauty in the world. In the same way that the mockingbird is targeted, African-Americans are also targeted. Just like the mockingbird, they do no harm and add diversity and ideas to the culture. The mockingbird could be seen as the direct symbol of the African-Americans, like Tom Robinson, who are targeted and tried for crimes they didn't commit.
