Max, a carpet installer, needs to calculate the amount of carpet needed to cover a floor that’s 3 1/2 yards wide and 4 3/4 yards long. What’s the area of the floor? How many square yards of carpeting are needed? ( area= length x width)

Area of a rectangle formula: A = length * width

A = l * w
A = 4.75 * 3.5
A = 16.625 or 16 5/8

The area of the floor is 16 5/8 yards², so therefore, 16 5/8 square yards of carpeting are needed.
