Why did general Charles Cornwallis retreat from Carolinas and March north into Virginia

The answer is that he had taken a serious casualties at Guilford Courthouse and elsewhere, and much of his Army was sick or wounded. Everywhere in the area the Americans had gained strength. The Colonial victories as we’ll had drawn foreign support and the British were forced to abandon their early gains.
