Which component of bone is responsible for its strength?

The answer is osteoid. It begins with unmineralized collagen fibers and ground substance. Later it becomes a calcified matrix. The matrix is mainly made of collagen and calcium ions. When not well mineralized, osteoblasts proliferates hence the bone will not have the desired strength. This results to deformation of bone causing rickets
