the answer is 43. you set the variable x equal to the words given in the equation. then you get the x terms on the same side and everything else on the other side and solve

x= the number
2x+12=3x-31

2x-3x= -31x-12
-x= -43

-x/-x= x
-43/-x= 43

x=43
