If the lateral area of a cone is 587pi cm^2and the radius is 32cm what is the slant height?

Lateral Area of a cone = PI * radius * slant height587 PI = PI * 32 * slant heightslant height = 587 / 32slant height = 18.34375 Even though the slant height can be calculated as 18.3 cm, how can you have a cone with a slant height that is greater than the radius?

The formula for this is an easy, straightforward one:
A= \pi rl where r is the radius and l is the slant height. You have your area and your radius, so solve it for slant height.
587= \pi 32l and
l= (587)/(32 \pi ). Multiply that pi in to the 32 and then divide that into 587 and you'll get 5.8
