To solve this equation you'll first distribute the 5.

5(x - 4) = 3x + 4
5*x - 5*4 = 3x + 4
5x - 20 = 3x + 4

Now add the 20.

5x - 20 + 20 = 3x + 4 + 20
5x = 3x + 24

Now subtract the 3x

5x - 3x = 3x - 3x + 24
2x = 24

Now divide by 2

2x/2 = 24/2
x = 12

X is 12

Hope this helps :)
