Yesterday at 12 a.m. (midnight) the temperature was 1.5 ˚F . The temperature change in the next 8-hour period of time was - ⅘ degree per hour. The temperature change for a 3-hour period after that was ¾ degree per hour.

1. What was the temperature at 11:00 a.m.?

2. What was the change in temperature from midnight to 11 a.m.?

Answer:

1. -2.23 degrees

2. -3.73 degrees

Explanation:

To find the temperature change at 11 am, we need to create the equation:

1.5 - {(-4/5*8) + (3/4*3)} = ?

First we'll handle everything in parenthesis and brackets. (Find the common denominator)

1.5 - (32/5 + 9/3) -> 1.5 - (-96/15 + 40/15)

1.5 - (56/15)

1.5 - 3 11/15

(turn 1.5 to a fraction)

1 7.5/15 - 3 11/15 = -2 4/15

-2 4/15 = -2.267 <- temperature at 11 am

1.5 - x = -2.23

(Subtract 1.5 from both sides)

-x = -3.73

(Multiply both sides by negative 1 to make x positive)

x= 3.73 <- temperature change.

I hope this helps!
