Two friends go to the store because mangoes and apples are on sale. One friend buys 4 mangoes and 7 apples, spending $14.89. The other buys 8 mangoes and 3 apples for a total of $18.89. How much does each mango and each apple cost?

4m + 7a = 14.89
8m + 3a = 18.89

Multiply the first equation by 3 and the second equation by 7

12m + 21a = 44.67
56m + 21a = 132.23

Then subtract the equations and get:

44m=87.56
m=1.99
mangoes cost = $1.99

To find the price of apples, substitute with the mangoes on one equation

4(1.99) + 7a = 14.89
7.96 +7a = 14.89
7a = 6.93
a = 0.99

apples cost = $0.99
