Given
8(1/4×+3/4)-3=17 and x = -7, check whether -7 is a solution. Subst. -7 for x:
8(1/4(-7)+3/4)-3=17
Mult everything by 4 to eliminate the fractions:
8(-7 + 3) - 3 = 17
Simplify:
8(-4) - 3 = 68 This is false, so x = -7 is not a solution.

-7 is the not the solution.
If you plug in -7 into the equation, you get -11, which doesn't equal 17.
8 (1/4x+ 3/4) - 3 = 17
8 (1/4(-7)+ 3/4) - 3 = 17
8 (-7/4 + 3/4) - 3 = 17
8 (-4/4) - 3 = 17
8 (-1) - 3 = 17
-8 - 3 = 17
-11
17
