Second, ATP provides the energy for most biological processes. When ATP breaks down into ADP and P, this releases energy which is used for many different cellular processes. Cellular Respiration is what the lungs provide through breathing, what the lungs do on a cellular level.

The lungs facilitate cellular respiration by providing oxygen in the process of turning glucose into ATP. During respiration, glucose is broken down in the cytoplasm of the cell in a process called glycolysis then the pyruvate molecules are transported into the mitochondria, which is the powerhouse of the cell. In the next stage, the energy in the energy carriers enters an electron transport chain and this energy is used to produce ATP.
