We are given that the cash register contains $10 and $20 bills.

Let us say there are x number of $10 bills and y number of $20 bills.

So there are total 23 bills.

x+y=23..............(1)

x=23-y.........(2)

We are also given that the total value of bills is $340 .

So that gives us the second equation,

10x+20y=340.........(3)

Plugging the value of x from equation (2) in (3),

10(23-y)+20y=340

(230-10y)+20y=340

10y=110

y=11

Plugging this value of y back in equation (2),

x=23-11= 12

Answer: So there are 12 bills of $10 and 11 bills of $20.
