To solve this question, place each parenthesis equal to 0

(x + 1)(x - 5) = 0

(x + 1) = 0
(x - 5) = 0

Solve, place into each variable a solution to the problem.

x + 1 = 0

Isolate the x, subtract 1 from both sides

x + 1 (-1) = 0 (-1)

x = 0 - 1

x = -1

(x - 5) = 0

Isolate the x, add 5 to both sides

x - 5 = 0

x - 5 (+5) = 0 (+5)

x = 0 + 5

x = 5

you're answers are: x = -1, x = 5

Therefore, D) x = -1 or x = 5 is your answer

hope this helps
