They visited in order to of urge the USSR to tear down the war in addition to bringing the attention of the world into the plight of people under totalitarian communism. JFK retorted that if people believe communism is the wave of the future, they would better visit Berlin and witness for themselves. 24 years later, Reagan visited and reinstated JFK point of views and urged Gorbachev to tear down the wall.
