Up to ten million more became refugees. Gandhi, who was well-respected and beloved by both sides, helped to end the violence by going on a hunger strike. He fasted, vowing not to eat until either he died or the fighting ceased. Unfortunately, he was assassinated just five months after independence by a Hindu extremist who hated his tolerance of Muslims.
