Try to present the problem entirely in algebraic notation, not in words.
Cost of materials: f(x) = (1/2)x + 1
Selling price: g( f(x) ) = [ f(x)+2] = [ (1/2)x + 1 ] + 2
Evaluate the selling price for x = 10:
[ (1/2)(10) + 1 ] + 2 = 6+2 = 8 (answer)
