A pulley is a simple machine consisting of a wheel and rope that helps in moving or controlling heavy loads. George Herbert's "The Pulley" is about God's strategy for controlling humankind. Through use of imagery and clever word choice, Herbert brings out the theme that God is giving but at the same time manipulative. Why is this not a strong introduction for an interpretive essay?

It does not include a thesis statement.

It does not present biographical reference.

It does not present a hook to entice readers.

The introduction of an interpretative essay should introduce the literary work, catch the reader's attention, and include a clearly written thesis statement that contains the literary interpretation.
