The 40 and 60 ohm resistors in parallel are equivalent to a single 24 ohm resistor. That 24 in series with 50 and 26 add up to 100 ohms. Then that 100 ohms in parallel with the other 100 ohms is equivalent to 50 ohms across the battery.
