The temperance movements began in the 1820's. They were religious and social movements that labeled alcohol and drunkenness a "national curse". By the 1870's many housewives began to complain that their lives were being destroyed by the heaving drinking of their men. They organized the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) to enforceĀ a ban on alcoholic drink.
