Ammonium hydrogen phosphate ((NH4)2HPO4), a common fertilizer, is made by reacting phosphoric acid (H3PO4) with ammonia according to the following reaction.

2NH3 + H3PO4 es001-1.jpg (NH4)2HPO4

What is the ratio of NH3 to H3PO4?

NHes001-2.jpg:Hes001-3.jpgPOes001-4.jpg = 2:

The reaction between ammonia and phosphoric acid to produce ammonium hydrogen phosphate is:

2NH3 + H3PO4 → (NH4)2HPO4

Based on the reaction stoichiometry:

2 moles of NH3 combines with 1 mole of H3PO4 to form 1 mole of (NH4)2HPO4

Thus the ratio of NH3:H3PO4 is 2:1
