An overgeneralization that obscures cultural difference within a group is a description of an ethnic gloss. An ethnic gloss gives a simple way to categorize a set of cultural groups into simple groups that relate to them. An example would be American Indians or Native Americans. By categorizing them through overgeneralization they can make a subgroup, a larger group than one that breaks down every small detail.
