The first step in the equation would be to convert our whole number into a fraction. To do so, we must simply use 1 as a denominator.

16 =
(16)/(1)

Now that we have successfully converted our whole number into a fraction, we must align them both so that we can multiply straight across.

(10)/(3) ×
(16)/(1) = ?

And next, we solve by multiplying straight across.

(10)/(3) ×
(16)/(1) =
(160)/(3)

Now, this could be our answer, but sometimes an answer will not be accepted as an improper fraction. So we will make it proper.

To do so, we must divide our numerator by our denominator.

160 ÷ 3 = 53.333...

We can ignore the continuous three's and just simplify that to a remainder of three.

So now we lay out our mixed fraction.

53
(1)/(3)

In short, y =
(10)/(3) ( 16 ) is
(160)/(3) or 53
(1)/(3)
