“Being Homeless is not a lifestyle choice.”
Respected homeowners,
Maxie is my name, and I volunteer at a local shelter. I have lived in the United Kingdom my whole life and am writing to express my concern about the present status of homelessness in my county and state. I feel that the problem of homelessness in the United Kingdom has reached unparalleled proportions. Little has been done to assist these individuals, and something must be done.
According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, approximately 150,000 individuals in the United Kingdom now lack a permanent home and sleep in tents, automobiles, or on the streets. This figure shows a 17% rise over the previous year's homeless population. (Britain Is Important).
While mental health issues, addiction, poverty, and job loss all contribute to homelessness, another significant cause is the high housing prices in the United Kingdom and the scarcity of cheap rentals. Emergency shelters, which provide homeless people with a cot and food for a few of nights, are a temporary solution. Additionally, emergency shelters are not the answer, since they have been said to be infested with "rats, bedbugs, unpleasant smells, and harassment widespread at some shelters" (Britain Matters).
Homelessness is both a public health and moral disaster. Individuals who are homeless are more likely to get illness, experience emotional stress, and have a shorter life expectancy. We need financing and health care professionals to reverse this trend. I am asking you to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign to support rent subsidies, board and care homes, health services, and mental health care facilities for homeless people, as well as affordable housing.
I appreciate your consideration and eagerly await your response to this matter.
Sincerely,
Maxie, a volunteer from your neighborhood shelter
